Prepd by reduction of D-allonic lactone with sodium amalgam: Levene, Jacobs, Ber. 43, 3147 (1910). Synthesis: Hughes, Speakman, J. Chem. Soc. 1965, 2236; Baker et al., Carbohydr. Res. 24, 192 (1972).

Properties: Crystals from dilute methanol, mp 128-128.5°. Shows mutarotation: [a]D20 +0.58° (4 min) ® +3.26° (10 min) ® +14.41° (final value, 20 hr; c = 5). Soluble in water. Practically insol in alcohol.

Melting point: mp 128-128.5°

Optical Rotation: [a]D20 +0.58° (4 min) ® +3.26° (10 min) ® +14.41° (final value, 20 hr; c = 5)
