5-Bromo-3-indoxyl caprylate is a bioluminescent substrate that is used in the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. It is also used as an enzyme substrate, chromogenic substrate, and chemiluminescent substrate for the detection of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) in biochemistry. 5-Bromo-3-indoxyl caprylate has been shown to be a ligand for the beta subunit of the human acetylcholine receptor and may be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. This compound can also be used as an indicator in food testing, culture media, fluorogenic substrates for environmental testing, and as a fluorescing agent for staining diagnostic tests.
