N,N-Dimethyldodecylamine N-oxide,LDAO; DDAO

Lauryldimethylamine N-oxide

N,N-Dimethyldodecylamine N-oxide, also known as lauryldimethylamine oxide (LDAO), is an amine oxide nonionic surfactant with a C12 alkyl chain used widely in cosmetics, washing, cleaning and personal care products. LDAO has antimicrobial properties and is effective against common bacteria such as S. aureus and E. coli.

LDAO is a zwitterionic detergent that can be used to solubilize membrane proteins. It has a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 1-2 mM. LDAO has been used to solubilize and extract colicin A from the plasma membrane and for inactivation of enveloped viruses. It has also been used in combination with 1-decanoyl-rac-glycerol (10MAG) to encapsulate proteins and nucleic acids dissolved in low viscosity fluids.

An optimized reverse micelle surfactant system has been developed for solution nuclear magnetic resonance studies of encapsulated proteins and nucleic acids dissolved in low viscosity fluids. Comprising the nonionic 1-decanoyl-rac-glycerol and the zwitterionic lauryldimethylamine-N-oxide (10MAG/LDAO), this mixture is shown to efficiently encapsulate a diverse set of proteins and nucleic acids. Chemical shift analyses of these systems show that high structural fidelity is achieved upon encapsulation.

LDAO (N,N-Dimethyldodecylamine N-oxide) is a zwitterionic detergent.

Lauryldimethylamine oxide (LDAO), also known as dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO), is a tertiary amine oxide resulting from the formal oxidation of the amino group of dodecyldimethylamine. It has a role as a plant metabolite and a detergent. It derives from a hydride of a dodecane. DDAO is a non-denaturing zwitterionic surfactant with a critical micelle concentration (CMC) or approximately 1 mM. It is used to solubilize proteins and to study the conformation and molecular interactions of macromolecules.
